Beginning with the registered magnum in 1938 the 5" N frame was the issue gun for the Mississippi Highway Patrol up until they were issued 686's for a short period before going to bottom feeders. They carried some equivalent of the model 27 for over 50 years. The RM's were carried in flap holsters as most of the original patrolmen rode motorcycles on mostly gravel highways. Several other holsters were used and the last 30+ years saw the Bill Jordan in use.

My Dad had friends who were MHP and they often let me handle their empty revolvers when I was a kid. I started as a LEO in 1969 and often worked with MHP officers on things and always admired the well made N frame .357's. I looked for one when I first started and when I finally found one there was a model 58 laying beside it in the display case. After some intense decision making I chose the 58 and wore it for several years on duty. I have since picked up several 27's and one 627-0. These are S&W craftmanship at it's best.
