Can't answer your question on rarity of the 4" barrel but I would assume they made less 4" than 6" and 6 1/2". Pre-29's I'm certain are rarer in 4".

I will agree the 4" 29-2 is one well balanced handgun. It comes up on target every time and feels good in the hand. My thoughts are the heavy barrel has quite a bit to do with it. The M13 has a similar balance and it has the heavy barrel.
