For .22 off the bench at 100 yards with scope shooting at bullseye targets, using mostly run of the mill .22 ammo and occasional match ammo is there any sort of guideline in terms of preferred barrel length?
Is longer better or is there some length where anything more does not return improved results?

A number of studies have shown that the .22 LR cartridge gets maximum velocity in a barrel of about 19 inches. Longer barrels are great for sight radius, but there is no velocity advantage in going longer than that.
