Modifications Mossberg 590 Series Shotgun

The following modifications were made to a Mossberg 590 series shotgun. One item not shown is a new stainless steel magazine follower which replaced the OEM follower. No special tools required. If you can comprehend instructions and have limited mechanical ability then it’s a no brainer on the other hand there are few among us whom may struggle.

One may find the required parts at Brownells. I believe these few modifications enhance the effective of the M590 in the defensive rule.

Changed the safety button out to a non-slip type

Mounted a side saddle shell carrier

Replaced the factory barrel bead sight with a luminous night sight

I need a new front sight BAD! Mine is all boogered up from mounting and removing the heat shield. I finally took it off for good.

How hard was it to mount that front sight? It's not part of a rifle sight set or ghost rings, is it? I just wanna replace my front bead sight with one of these or perhaps an XS Big Dot.

I resemble that remark!!!

Looks nice. I've got my 870 set up so that I can switch between home defense and ducks in about eight minutes. No side saddle, though.

It’s not a big deal. Three are a least three providers of luminous bead front sights. Marble (Page#-247), Meprolight (Page#-248) and XS (Page#-251) Brownells Cat # 62. The one I used is Meprolight required a thread tap. The XS would require a special bead (that threads in place) then the XS Big Dot epoxies over that bead to be secured in place. The Marble as five thread sizes. Off the top of my head I can’t recall the thread size employed by Mossberg. I borrowed the tap of another individual. Cost runs from $33 - $60. I opted for the Meprolight (12Yr illumination life) @ $37.

Is there any advantage to a metal trigger guard? I don't know about you dennis, but my 590 already weighs a TON!!!

Mine is set up almost identical to yours - sidesaddle, 20" barrel but I have a Speedfeed stock on mine which holds four more rounds.

Damn! That thangs heavy!!!

Looks good to me, I especially like that safety and the side-saddle. I wonder if those items would fit on my 500. Not sure what the differences are between the 590 and 500?

I was going to offer you one...as I ordered an extra when I ordered the one for mine about six years ago.

If I can find it that is.

No easy task.

However, you do have to pull everything off of your old assembly and put it on the new one...don't lose anything...like I did.

What's the advantage of the steel trigger guard?

I've had my 590 for about 8/9 years with no troubles.

It’s a matter of perceived durability. The non polymer/plastic guard was part of the MIL-Spec.

The safety and side saddle fit the 500.

Thank you but I’m going to stay with the housing I have now. I always like assemblies that have “X” number of parts and at final assembly “Y” number of parts are apparently extra

The main difference is the magazine tube and barrel. The 590 has a longer magazine and the end cap is a lot like that found on a 870 Remington. The 500 has female threads in the end of the magazine tube and a screw that holds the barrel on. There are cosmetic differences too, the 590 is parkerized and most have a heat shield. My 590 is pre-ban and even has a bayonet lug...

The kit includes the safety button and related safety system parts. The safety button screw employed by Mossberg is a tamper proof/resistant screw. It can be nettlesome to remove because of the slot in the head is made for one way directional rotation. That said the screw can be removed but on occasion cosmetic damage occurs to the head. I’d opt for the kit but that’s up to you.

The main differences b/w the 500 and 590 are the 590 has a metal safety and triggerguard, as opposed to the 500's being polymer. The 590 also has a heavier barrel than the 500.
Some 590's have heatshields, which from what I understand, are pretty close needing an act of congress to get on a 500.
My 590A1 has ghost ring sights, a post front sight, a bayo-lug, sling swivels, and looks like this:

The 590A1 and a base 590 are different. Standard base 590 has the polymer fire control housing and safety button.
