Never say "always" with Smith & Wesson. This Model 28-2 came to me in the original box with the target grips numbered (stamped) to the gun. The gun with its larger grips fits perfectly in the box, and the authentic end label indicates "T" in the "Stock" box, indicating target stocks. Serial # is N568xx; Roy Jinks says it was made in September, 1980.
