A large well fed male can get over 1200 lbs. and they can move at about 30 mph when charging. The only truely effective defense is to know their behaviors, knowing how to read the bears responses, and knowing when to get out of their way. I would suggest that your friends hire a good guide when venturing into bear habitat.
