My Dad was 38 when War broke out...He signed up early
on...but his age kept him from being able to enlist.
He was approached by the US Coast Guard as he owned and captained a 36 foot cabin cruiser The Lenape'.
He sign on as a Civilian Coast Watcher, his primary occupation
was a Film Projectionist.
He would close the theater about 11PM then leave the Miami River dock usually with 1 or 2 Coasties at about 12AM
They would cruise Biscayne Bay , Fowey Rock Light House,
Cape Florida, and north Key largo.
He carried the
* Circa 1926 * Hand Ejector in a US Flap holster
in the wheel cockpit. Their job was to watch for saboteurs landing or smugglers.
He said, they often saw fires from U-boat attacks some
quite close to shore ( 10 miles )
They were not to respond to these directly, as large Cutters handled these.
As an aside, he being in the Film Industry Union
was hired to advise on John Ford's "They Were Expendable" 1945
and that led to a career in Film work.
He also was involved on " PT 109" in 1961.
