S&W-Keeper, you are right about supply and demand, but the difference here is that if you can't find the 10-22 used, you just buy a new one for under $200 at the big-box sporting goods store. Someone said S&W is making the 18 again, but wouldn't it be different (not as well made) and include the lock?
