As a rule, I don't like to use prop rods; I agree with some that they do tend to distract from the gun itself. Occasionally, I'll use one to get the proper angle. I have two, one of the blue S&W types, and a clear acrylic job that is more generic. I think its use is not quite as distracting. Here's an example:
