Recoil depnds on energy (among other things) which goes up as the square of the speed. In competition, where we must make a certain power factor (momentum) we learn that a heavy bullet going slow has less recoil than a somewhat lighter bullet going faster to make the same power factor. Another one of those "counter-intuitive" relationships in physics. It's also easier to load a heavier bullet than to achieve "uber-velocity" with a light bullet when handloading.
