I think a lot of that goes back to the feed problems the original 59s had back in the early 70s. My dad and a friend of his owned a gun store 71-73 time frame, and they had some problems with 59s they sold. They closed the gunstore in 73, S&W fixed the problems with the 59s, but my dad, until very, very recently would say Smith autos were junk. It wasn't until he fired my 5906 he said "this is a nice gun." Now he is hinting at getting one.
