I wouldn't carry a 44 mag for personal protection, unless your afraid of a sasquatch while hiking.
I think the 44 mag would be hard to control off hand and slow for rapid fire. Above all, the muzzle blast will cause you hearing damage if fired in the right places, i.e. inside your car or inside your bedroom.
When I was younger I carried a 44 spl for a while, then retired it to a house gun. They don't carry that well on a belt compared to a 45 pistol. Your results may differ.
My choice is any 44 spl HP load. 44 spl worked well as a hunting round, just research Elmer Keith.
