I headed out to buy an M&P 22 last month, but wad not overwhelmed by it, given the price. So I decided to get a River mk III target competition model, since I had wanted one since I was a kid (but it was a mk II back then). I can't say I was disappointed at all with the Ruger, but I might just as well have liked the M&P, which would be a great trainer.
