Concerning the factory crowns, while not pretty IMO they really won't have a MEASUREABLE effect on accuracy. Stainless steel just rips up cutting edges and what you are seeing is a typical result of using high speed steel cutting tools. S&W could go to high dollar ceramics and flood cool the operation but I'm certain they've concluded the additional cost doesn't yield anything more than improved visual results. Specifically, the gun won't shoot any more accurately and they are in the business of building guns, not Art Work.

If you don't like the way that chamfer looks there is a simple fix. That is to clamp the barrel in a vise and spend a couple of hours lapping it by hand. It's what I did to my 625. Didn't improve the accuracy at all but it is a bit prettier.
