Seller claims the sn is 1354 with a fluted cylinder, octagon barrel and birds head grips.
So this thread is from Oct 2011, but...

AFAIK, the fluted cylinder started with the 1st model 3rd issue, BUT the serial numbers start above 60XXX somewhere. An SN of 1354 should have an unfluted cylinder. I suppose most people in this thread recognize that.

All Smith & Wesson Revolvers have the stamp on the side, serial # on the handle, and year made on the barrel. They didn't make Silver in those years. It was a steel blue coloring.
Earlier guns such as these did not have the "S&W" monogram. In fact, many many S&Ws did not have that. Also, no S&Ws to my knowledge have a factory stamp with year made on the barrel. As opoefc said, they did have a full factory silver plate option. Instead of "steel blue coloring" aka blued finish (?) which IIRC only started on the 1st model 3rd issue, you could have gotten half plate and this normal on the 1st model 1st issue and the 1st model second issue. The 1st / 3rds were available full nickel, full blue, or half plate (rare).
