I called a contact at S&W and he admitted that this has been pretty common for decades. All he coud suggest was to polish the chambers and try different ammo brands.
I'll never buy another of those. I'm sure they can't all be that bad, but I got scalded once and I'm not risking the hot water again.

Had the same problem with a Model 18. The problem was unfired powder builds up under the star/extractor and gets in the chambers.For an auto, the only two I have that don't jam are a woodsman and a Ruger MKII. Both are super accurate and dependable.
For all round use and dependability, I would go with a Single Six or a Colt. Colt will be pricey, I expect. The 22 mag gives you a little more of an edge if you need it but gives up a little in accuracy.
