Had the same problem with a Model 18. The problem was unfired powder builds up under the star/extractor and gets in the chambers.For an auto, the only two I have that don't jam are a woodsman and a Ruger MKII. Both are super accurate and dependable.

For all round use and dependability, I would go with a Single Six or a Colt. Colt will be pricey, I expect. The 22 mag gives you a little more of an edge if you need it but gives up a little in accuracy.
