I usually get a feel for round count by how polished the barrel is at the points where it wears against the slide. If you can field strip the weapon, you an also inspect the wear points between the slide and frame.
The 5906 is a solid gun, even a beat to **** LEO turn-in will serve you well, but a minty specimen is a sight to behold. I have two 5906's, and I would have a tough time passing up a shiny like new one for $425 out the door.
