HF - M

anyone know what this might mean?
A pretty late gun that most likely shipped in the latter part of 1944. A lot of these, especially in that .38 S&W chambering, ended up being surplus for the U.S. Gov't (or whoever they furnished it to) once the war was over, and under those circumstances, its disposition and later employment could be very difficult to pin down. If somebody knows what that cryptic "HF-M" marking means, it'll just be a matter of good fortune.
