No wonder at all. The firing pin on rimfires must crush the rim between the firing pin and the chamber recess. If you don't have a cartridge or snap cap in place, the firing pin will peen the recess enough that you will have difficulty inserting and ejecting cartridges and eventually failure to fire malfunctions.
