The term "the whole 9 yards" came from U.S. fighter pilots in WWII in the Pacific. When ground crew armed their planes on the ground, the .50 caliber machine gun ammo belts measured exactly 27-feet, before being loaded into the plane. If the ground crew fired the entire belt into the target, it got "the whole 9 yards."
