Two things are required for successful ejection of a spent casing, the EXTRACTOR, which is shown in your small pic, and is in the slide, and the EJECTOR, which is the lever that you removed. The ejector also doubles as the mag safety lever, and if you want to disable that feature (not recommended) you only need to remove the previously mentioned plunger and spring, which are located in the slide, under the rear sight......the extractor pulls the spent casing from the chamber, and as the slide travels rearward, the ejector pushes the spent casing up and to the right, basically throwing it free from the slide......without the ejector, which is the part you removed, the casing simply stays in the extractor......and yes, many 910 and 915 models saw law enforcement and security duty....
