Okay. That makes sense now. The no-dash production continued until, I think, 1988, when the dash 3 came out with changes to the yoke. The dash 1 and dash 2 were special items that were made concurrently with the no dash guns. I was thinking this was an early no dash which (I think) all had 2" barrels. Your gun dates from around 1984. It should have a square grip frame.

Yes. Those oversize grips are a problem for loading and unloading. That is why, on the larger frame guns (K and N), S&W came out with the relieved target stocks in the late 1950s. The good news is that J frame square butt stocks are not hard to find. I have a couple in my extra grips box. I think both are diamond stocks and quite worn. But you can probably find some correct nice ones on line or here on the WTB/WTS list.
