Both are excellent revolvers, but they are not making any more M-28's and they are still making the L frames.
The finish on your M-28 appears to be in better condition than the nickel finish on the 586.
If it were my decision, which it is not, I would hang on the my M-28 and buy a 586 or 686 when I was ready.
