Why? Because:

1. Improved transitions when shooting speed-steel competitions. HUGE advantage.

2. Louder report, so the electronic timer can hear the shot when shooting speed-steel competitions.

3. More maneuverable in the front seat of the car (if you drive around your property with the rifle).

4. If you add a suppressor, the final length can be kept a reasonable 16 inches or so.

5. If you add a suppressor, a short barrel will keep the bullet subsonic.

6. Looks cool.

You can use a hack-saw, file, and crowning tool to shorten the barrel. Easy peasy.

However, I would never cut the threads with a die. You're asking for trouble. Threads should be centered on the bore, not the barrel OD.
