You do not want to ease the slide forward. Always slingshot it, otherwise you may have feed/battery issues.
As for using the slide lock lever as a release, I've never seen or heard of anyone who has had problems due to that. It's perfectly fine. It may cause a minor bit of wear on the actual stop where it contacts the slide, but that wouldn't prevent it from stopping the slide after the last round.
