Even your .22LR will cause permanent hearing damage if fired in a hallway in a home.

There's a lot to be said for keeping good quality electronic muffs by your home defense gun. If you have time to put them on, not only will they protect your hearing if you should need to fire, but they will amplify those small sounds that may give you the advantage you need to protect your family.

I've been known to wear them in a deer blind, but most of the damage has already been done from spending 45+ years around firearms, even with them on.
