True, the dust cover is not that big of a deal. Leaving it off allows S&W to offer the sport at a cheaper price. It's not a must have for me, but I do like the idea of the dust cover, simply because it's well known that AR15 type rifles run best with the bolt really well lubed. It's known that lube traps dust. So being able to cover up my well lubed bolt to keep dust away is nice.
People often bring up the pistol comparison, and that none of them have dust covers - but they don't have an exposed bolt either.
