As Brian noted they are linked in Michigan. In my case I strongly suspect it worked to my benefit on one occasion, because Michigan has rather high standards on who gets a permit.

I was a bit "lazy" about slowing down entering a contruction zone on I-75 once and just coasting down. The state trooper had me dead to rights at 68 in a 60 mph construction area and pulled out an followed me closely for 2 or 3 miles. Finally I say to myself "time to take your lumps" and pull onto the shoulder to stop and that trooper pulled even, honked his horn, then he shook his finger at me and drove on. IMO what he found out when he radioed in was that I was a CPL holder and had a spotless driving record so he let me off with a warning. BTW, lesson learned and I now brake for construction zones.
