I had much the same thought when the Shield was announced. In the interim while waiting to see if this was something I wanted I was able to buy a 3913 and no rail 3913TSW. Both of which do everything the Shield does and more.
Since it will likely be a year or so before the R51 gets on the MA approved list, I'll have plenty of time to read reviews. I think the concept and design are good, but the real test will be in the construction and durability of the R51.
I certainly wouldn't be against owning a non S&W gun if it was a quality product.
