So I "Bubba'd" my SKS (pics)

Great job on the SKS and a perfect rifle to start with.
It looks good with the finish as is but i would really like
to see what it would look like with a satin finish as well.
Just a tad bit shiny for my taste but you did good for
your first one.

Chuck

With the original finish who would have suspected that it was made of really good wood.

I would have never guessed. Being a mil surp I'm surprised it was a decent looking piece of wood. Luck of the draw I guess.

Thanks everyone for the comments. Much appreciated.

Not an SKS fan..................really, how can they be bubba'd? Now if it was a 1903 springfield, or a 98 Mauser, Swede or a Swiss K31..............that's a different story! You didn't hurt the "collector" value of that SKS at all IMO!

Not an sks fan? Remember when we shot the semi auto 22 rifles plinking with as kids? Now we're grown up and we need to move up to something with a bigger bang because we're not kids anymore. You throw a 30rd mag in an sks and plink at soda cans forever. These are fun affordable little guns. All you have to do is to shoot one. Trust me these are awesome accurate rifles too. I can shoot 1 1/2" groups @ 100yds using Chinese ammo. That's not too shabby for a cheap Chinese rifle. I like the norinco sks better than the other countries. I think the Chinese refined the sks more than the Russians did.

Ahh, the anti-Chinese gun bias is alive and well it seems. Actually, if you look around you will find that the Chinese SKS is generally considered the most accurate of the breed, as Big Bill described. Also, they were made a a number of different factories, each with differing marks and little peculiarities in production. Some have provenance as Sino-Soviet weapons and others came from the Chinese Security Forces, rather than being made for the PLA. They are as collectible as any other milsurp, IN THEIR ORIGINAL FORM AND FINISH.:(

Well now---that looked like fun. Good job.
Mine was not quiet such good wood when I uncovered it so I covered it back up with a color I liked better.
Blessings

One things for certain, if you lean that one against a tree and walk away from it, you'll be able to find it without much searching.

I certainly wouldn't consider that Bubbaized.
You didn't clamp it in a bench vise and take hacksaw and pliers to it.
No black painted hose clamps for barrel bands. No WW .99 flashlight JB Welded to the fore end. No old piece of hand cut foam or gasket material glued to the butt.
No, just a nice refinish on the furniture.
Looks good.

I think I'd go to the satin finish. A little more befitting a military firearm.

That is NOT Bubbaing........

That's not Bubbaing. Bubbaing is what I did to my Savage rifle by cutting the stock myself out in the garage because I didn't want to pay anyone that was competent to do it! You could laugh at it but I like the way it shoots much better.:D

Who remembers the days when you could buy a hand selected SKS for under $100? I do. And, I still have 2 in my safe. Ah, the good old days.

Just for anyone wanting to do this or make any modification to a military rifle, first make sure of what your doing it with. An unaltered 1949 Russian Tula or a 1953 or 54 unaltered Russian Izzy can bring over a $1000 on GB where as one that has the same treatment as the OP's would be real lucky to bring half of that.

An unaltered K98k can bring as much as $3000 now, perhaps more. Gramps K98k that got the hunting rifle treatment would be hard to sell at $500.

Prices on UNALTERED milsurps will alway rise.
