27 yards was probably at least twice as far as anyone ever needed in combat.
Accuracy-wise, some GI guns might not even keep all of their shots within the -1 (center of mass) zone of an IDPA target at 27 yards, even from a machine rest. They were built for reliability, not accuracy.
I've had a bit of a 1911 itch lately and the Remington looks very good for the money, although I don't get enough range time with the guns I already own. Besides, I've owned 3 or 4 and hate chasing brass.
