Even so, volume of gas is a factor. I'm just not sure it's a huge factor. I'm sure a 12ga has more volume than either, yet the porting on a shotgun has almost no value. I believe this is due to the pressures being usually 12kpsi or less.

Meh, it doesn't matter. Muzzle brakes and compensators do work. That's enough for me.
How do you think a muzzle brake works?

It the gas volume being redirected by the brake that makes it work. The more gun powder that is used the more effective a muzzle brake will be.
