That little lever is a slide LOCK, not a release.
IMHO, using it as a release may aid in its premature wear.
It is some pretty soft and thin material.

If you think of the violence that happens when you fire a round, letting the slide slam into battery is perfectly fine

The part is not expensive, but a PITA to replace.
