2nd edition SC of S&W lists 1994 for S/N CAFxxxx production.
4th edition SC of S&W is sketchy and unclear, suggesting maybe late 1995 - early 1996.
I have S/N CBExxxx with the factory S&W box, late 1994 / early 1995 production. It contains no MIM parts but it has the angled cylinder release. So, I'd say a good bet for your M640-1, pre-dating the angled cylinder release, would be earlier 1994 production, some of the first ones.
