I have S/N CBExxxx, late 1994 production, which has no MIM parts but it has the angled cylinder release.
So, I'd say a good bet for your 640-1, without the angled cylinder release, would be earlier 1994 production, some of the first ones.

Thanks m3b, I really thought it would be newer than that, but I'm even more happy that it's probably one of the older ones.
I'll give S&W a call in a day or two and see what they say although I really don't need to since you have the books to reference just like they do.
The bore is perfect and it looks like this one was well taken care of. It does have the minor scratches on it like the others but nothing major. I may just clean it and leave the finish alone since it's going to be carried.
