The Magnum rounds mentioned have longer cases so they (in theory) cannot be fully seated in a Special cylinder, for safety reasons. There are revolvers out there in .38 Special that were made without chamber shoulders, and .357 Magnum rounds will chamber and fire, usually with spectacular results...no fair guessing in what way.
