The Power Port is factory only. The barrel has to be made that way from scratch. A PP is at the tip of the barrel, ahead of the front sight, and includes a small expansion chamber.
What you describe on your M686 sounds like Mag-Na-Ports. They're a company in Michigan that developed a magnetic discharge method of cutting thin slots in existing barrels, without affecting the heat treat or rifling. They have NO expansion chamber.
MP did contract work for S&W, Lew Horton, other distributors, and anyone who sends them a gun. They all look and function just the same, since it's just that one company in Michigan that does the work for everyone. Check out their website, they're still around.
