"Murder" and "manslaughter" rates, going back into the 60's, when the FBI started publishing the statistics, can be a bit deceiving. Think about the state of EMS, trauma centers, 911 and cell phone availability back then. A person is quite a bit more likely to survive a shooting now than then.
