I own a later-production, laser-marked 457 and it came with a metal guide rod with a plastic plunger. I've never actually seen a plastic 457 guide rod, but believe they would have been on the earlier models. As long as they still sported the dual recoil springs, I don't see why a metal guide rod wouldn't work as a substitute.

I've had no major issues with the plastic guide rods on any of my 908's, and prefer to use them in those guns.

FWIW, Midway has metal guide rods for the 457 in stock for around $12, so a spare one in the parts bin wouldn't break the bank.
