For example when I lived in New York it was required to have the serial number of the pistol listed on your permit and possession of pistol without the number listed on your permit was a serious offense. In some places carry guns have to be listed by serial number on your permit and those are the number only ones you are approved to carry. Having the serial number specifically correct on paperwork from a dealer is something I would insist on even now that I live in a free state with no such issues. If the gun is stolen then recovered how are you going to confirm it was yours without the correct serial number?!
