I can tell you that the S&W business model with the M&P has not changed since it's inception: Come out with a Gen 1 with a manual safety, then come out with a Gen 1 with no manual safety, then come out with a Gen 1 Performance Center with a manual safety, then come out with a Gen 1 Performance Center with no manual safety, then come out with a Gen 2 with a manual safety, then come out with a Gen 2 with no manual safety, etc., etc., etc.
With the Shield 45 being M2.0 ish it's just a matter of time until the Shield 9 is M2.0 ish. That's how you sell as many S&W as possible and how you get current S&W owners to buy a second one, or a third one, or a... Let's not forget that the M2.0 is really just a tweaked M1.0 with some cosmetic upgrades.
