They used to be used extensively to start races, both track and swimming.
Go back and watch some Olympics from the 60's.
My swim coach had both 22 and 32 blank revolvers.
We wanted to steal them in the worst way but he knew this and held them close
A lot of them were tip-up single shots.
I have to tell you at an indoor pool when that 32 (or 38) blank goes off you start involuntarily!
Now they use a wimpy electronic beeper.
I became a certified official and always turn the starting beeper up to max.
Still not the same. The kids will never know.
The only blank gun I have is the 10 ga Winchester cannon used to start yacht races.
The Chinese still make the black powder blanks for these and they are loud and will fill up a parking lot with smoke.
Good fun.

That's a very interesting and good looking blank gun.
Most of the ones I have seen and used are basically junk and look it.
