I pulled over the former mayor of the 'next town over' one
afternoon, for speed. As I got to his door, I immediately
recognized him--he'd been mayor for at least ten years, and
was fairly regular in local papers and TV news.

I gave him the usual who/why/how much spiel, and he said "You know who I am?"
Thinking quick, I said cordially (and with full sincerity), "Of course Mr. Mayor, and
I'm sure you want to be treated just like any other citizen."

He accepted his citation without a murmur.
