If you need a gun in your garage, carry it on you. There are many reasons:

(1) Stashing an unsecured weapon in arguably the most easily-burgled part of your house is unattractive. I can't imagine anything I'd like less than putting a CCW-able pistol on the street. Plus--you have kids. If you hide it, they're gonna find it.

(2) Are you going to check on it every day? Because if you're not, you've got a gun in a part of the house that's easily-accessed, that you don't spend a lot of time watching over, then you might not check on for days or weeks on end. When it gets stolen, you're not going to know about it.

(3) Locking it in a small safe in a room full of tools isn't the most secure thing in the world, as has been mentioned.

(4) If you need a gun in your garage, you're going to have absolutely zero warning--you're going to need it fast. Digging around in a hiding place or unlocking a safe isn't.
