The style of stock in Whitecoyote's post/pic is called a "Birdshead". They are somewhat less punishing than a typical pistol style grip/stock. I was told this is due to the recoil force being distributed differently. I have a black synthetic one on a 18", 12ga pump. This may or may not assist in your search for that style in wood.
