I know guys that have used Plasti-Dip on hand tools. It didn't hold up well.

You can buy rubber electrical splicing tape at Home Depot or Lowes that works well (my experience anyway). It's not the black PVC electrical tape, like Scotch 33+, most people are familiar with. It's self bonding and made from a synthetic rubber. Makes a decent grip.
