If the set screws are torqued properly the gas block won't move. Add some red Loctite and they'll never move. I've done three myself and helped with several more. None have moved in thousands of rounds.
Even so, pinned is better.
Yes, you can do this yourself. Look on the Brownell's website for videos on gas block replacement. It's a lot easier than it looks.
No need to spend big bucks on a low profile gas block. There's no real precision there other than the barrel diameter. Any $30 gas block will perform fine.
