It provides more than enough grip, and the extractor rod does not move at all in the chuck jaws, so it does not leave any marks. I know that it has enough grip to strip the threads on an extractor rod if I am not careful.

I admit that I might still like to have the Brownell's tool because it is a nicely made tool just for this purpose, so I would certainly not discourage you from getting one. But so far I have not had the need for one.
