I go more by proportional appearance than the ruler, although I'll use the ruler to make my point. My 640 Pro's barrel is about ½" longer than the cylinder, and it looks like a snubby.
My 460ES's barrel is about ½" longer than the cylinder, and it looks like a snubby, too, but it doesn't meet your 2½" rule.
A 3" revolver doesn't "look" like a snubby; on that we agree.
