I clean all "new to me" guns before I fire them. Especially the ones that have never been fired before.
I replace the recoil spring on all "new to me" guns before I fire them as well. A week ago I bought a never fired, ANIB 3953TSW. When I stripped it down and compared the recoil spring to a new one, it was measurably shorter. I replaced the original one because it's cheap insurance and S&W doesn't have replacement frames.
Both of those guns appear to be in great shape. You'll find the 5903 very pleasant to shoot and extremely accurate.
